In electrolysis of molten sodium chloride, after chlorine loses it's negative charge it forms Cl molecule?

The book says it doesn't exist as an atom hence it forms chlorine gas (CL2 molecule). But sodium exists as an atom even though it has to lose electron to gain stable electronic configuration. PLEASE UNDERSTAND THE QUESTION AND HELP!!!!
